Attorney General Praises WIMPS
01/12/2009
Baroness Scotland, the UK Attorney General has just given an award to four of the members of the WIMPS Crew. Shauneen, Aiobheann, Una and Karen were visited by the Attorney General, and Justice Minister, Paul Goggins, at their school - St Dominic's in Belfast today.
Baroness Scotland said, "I have seen the future, and it is female!" She went on to strongly praise the film the group made as an entry to her competition to find members for her youth advisory panel. The group then got to interview the Attorney General and the Justice Minister.
Carol McCann, Principal of the school, spoke of the importance of the schools links with Public Achievement and WIMPS, and welcomed the Attorney General and the Minister to the school. The girls parents, other pupils involved in WIMPS and students from the lower sixth form who are interested in joining the WIMPS Crew attended the event in the school.
The girls' film
explored a lot of important issues specific to Northern Ireland - such as segregation, peace lines and poltical conflcit, but also explored issues of wider concern to young people, including the growth of racism and the excesses of anti-terror legislation. Baroness Scotland praised their conviction and said they were exactly the kind of young people she wanted to hear from and to get advice from in her important role.
