Report Shows Improvements in Policing

30/03/2010
Public Achievement's trading arm Achieve Enterprises, has just published a research report with the Institute for Conflict Research as well as producing a film interviewing over 200 young people from all over Northern Ireland.  The underlying message of the report is positive - with key improvements in the relationship between young people and the police since the last comparable study in 2003.

The report - launched on 30 March at Queen's Film Theatre, Belfast, includes a landscape review of existing youth projects on policing, a literature review and analysis of over 200 questionnaires completed by young people living in tough realities across Northern Ireland.  Although young people continue to experience what they perceive as hostility and stereotyping from the police, the overall picture has improved in the past 7 years.

The report is accompanied by a 24 minute film, created through sessions with young people across Northern Ireland.  All the young people in the film (and those who completed the survey) are from tougher social realities inluding 'interface' communities and areas disproportionately affected by social disadvantage and the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Speaking about the report and its findings, Basil McCrea, MLA, Chair of the Policing Board’s Human Rights Committee said “This is an excellent piece of research and allows the views and voices of young people across Northern Ireland to be heard on policing matters and others issues of civic importance. I would like to thank all the children and young people who took the time to provide their views, and Achieve Enterprises and the Institute of Conflict Research for their work.”

The report can be downloaded from our publicactions section.
