Four members of the WIMPS Crew have been selected for an award by the Attorney General of the UK! Una Crossen, Shauneen Conlon, Karen Devlin and Aoibheann Fitzpatrick – all students at St Dominic’s College in Belfast entered the competition by creating and submitting a video highlighting many of the issues faced by young people.
In the film they highlight the issues of ‘peace walls’ dividing communities, stalemates in politics, the segregated education system and segregated communities. The group then linked these issues to some of the problems facing young people in Britain – including the growth of racist political groups, ageism – and in particular the portrayal of young people in the media, knife crime and the role of the police.
The group will now become part of the Attorney General’s Youth Advisory Panel. Their award is for ‘overall impact’, and the group achieved the highest overall score from all the groups across the UK who entered.
The Attorney General says she is keen to visit the girls at their school and that she looks forward to hearing from them through the Youth Advisory Panel. The award is a great testament to the dedication and commitment of the WIMPS Crew and their sharp analysis of the issues of the day.
