Away from Violence - South Africa
This project is a collaboration between Public Achievement, and our partners
Bush Radio
in Cape Town, South Africa. Bush Radio is the 'Mother of Community Radio in Africa' (and much of the rest of the world!), and has been an active partner of Public Achievement since 2004. Through our former 'Youth Work in Contested Spaces' project, our colleagues from Bush Radio have been actively involved in a series of training events, conferences and exchanges that have helped us to collectively understand the contribution of youth workers to building democracy with young people in conflicted and post-conflict societies around the world.
The
Lloyds TSB Foundation for Northern Ireland
is supporting this project, which will parallel our own
'Away from Violence'
and
'Breaking the Cycle'
projects. Volunteer coaches from Bush Radio and a range of partner organisations will work with groups of young people in the Western Cape Province on issues of violence in their communities.
In December 2009 a small group from Public Achievement will travel to Bush Radio to work with the Away from Violence project and to participate in and contribute to the 'Media Kidocracy Konference' on Robben Island - run annually by Bush Radio. Check back for updates, and look out for media products from the project on this site and on
WIMPS.
In December 2009, our Youth Work Manager Debs, and Civic Educator Caoimhe, went to Cape Town with Una and Nathan from WIMPS to visit Bush Radio and to meet the groups involved in their Away from Violence project. You can read their blog of the visit
