Breaking the Cycle
The
Breaking the Cycle
project is the sister project of
Away from Violence
, and is supported by the Department of Education through Youthnet. This work focuses specifically on two themes which have been highlighted as particular problems for young people:
Domestic violence
Research and anecdotal evidence suggests that an increasing number of young women experience violence in relationships and in the home. At the recent Upper Springfield youth issues conference domestic violence was raised as a key issue. The project work with groups of young women and will link them with experts in this field including Women’s Aid.
Racism
The demography of Northern Ireland is constantly changing as our society becomes more diverse and multi-cultural. Young people have raised the issues of racism and xenophobia as a particular problem - which in their view, schools and communities are often ill equipped to address. The project will work on the issue of racism with groups of young people, and also link with young people through the Northern Ireland Committee for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (NICRAS) - one of our partner organisations.
