Cross Border Road Safety Project

Driving Change is a cross border road safety project funded through the European Union’s INTERREG IVA Programme and managed by the Special EU Programme Body, it is aimed at reducing the numbers of people killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions.  It is targeted in Northern Ireland (excluding Belfast) and the 6 Border Counties of the Republic of Ireland.

Driving Change is a collaborative project between the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS), Louth Fire & Rescue Service, Monaghan Fire & Rescue Service, Cavan Fire & Rescue Service, Leitrim Fire & Rescue Service, Sligo Fire & Rescue Service & Donegal Fire & Rescue Service, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS), the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government (DECLG), the Department of Environment, Road Safety Branch, Cooperation and Working Together and Public Achievement, a youth focused voluntary organisation.

Our aim is to tackle road safety through

Intervention
- we will work with Fire And Rescue Services North and South of the Border in order to provide a better service of casualty care and improve survival rates.

This will be achieved through the combined delivery of Extrication training and First Responder/First Person On the Scene training to Fire Fighters.

Prevention - we will work in communities, targeting young people (16 to 25 years old) encouraging them to identify local road safety issues and supporting them in developing a project to tackle these issues.

In doing so we will raise awareness in the community of the positive work young people are doing and will promote the road safety message.  To achieve this we will recruit and train coaches from within the community including local Fire Fighters to support the groups so that they can achieve their aims.
