Public Achievement have recently completed their Citizenship programme with pupils in Year 10 at St Jospeh's College, Belfast. The groups worked on projects looking at issues such as Bullying, Fair Trade, Global Warming, School Uniform and Terrorism to name but a few. To see some of the projects the young people worked on, visit the media page of our WIMPS? website.
Public Achievement's schools programme is active in five different schools in Northern Ireland. The curriculum our coaches follow in the schools is similar to that of the coaches in our other programmes. In each class, coaches and teachers support young people in identifying and researching personal, social or political issues of concern to them. Then the young people break into groups to design and carry out an action plan to respond to the problem they have identified. Finally, the young people present their work and reflect on it. To learn about the work of the programme in specific schools, refer to these locations. You can also visit two of our partner schools on the web, Brownlow Integrated College and Hazelwood College.
The schools programme relies heavily on the work of volunteer coaches in cooperation with teachers. This year our schools coaching is being done by students of Queen's University and the University of Ulster as well as Public Achievement interns and staff. There are opportunities for new coaches to become involved on an ongoing basis.
