Museums

For the past 3 years, Public Achievement have been piloting a project supporting innovative youth work in museums in conjunction with the Irish Museums Association and partner museums in Cavan, Monaghan, Fermanagh and Belfast. This work was supported by the Departments of Education (in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic) and by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland under the Peace II Programme. We have been supporting and training museum staff to work with groups of teenagers in each of the museums, and the results have been encouraging and exciting as you can see in the other pages in this section.

We are currently awaiting the outcome of a major funding bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support a 5 year development of this work. This will include working to support local museums and museum services to work with young people in surrounding communities, and developing training for museums staff in engaging with young people and their communities.

Work at the Fermanagh museum continues, thanks to funding from the Four Acres Trust - with the new group involved in activities surrounding the Halloween celebrations in the museum. We are also working on a project with the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education (NICIE) on material culture and religious and political diversity.
