Talking Citizenship

08 Nov 2005

A report on the Talking Citizenship conference held in Derry in October 2004. This important conference brought together young people, leading educationalists, politicians, business people and other public figures. We encourage you to pay particular attention to the recommendations at the end of the report. A follow-up event was held in June 2005 looking at the issue of youth participation. A report on this event will be available shortly, as will video footage from the two events.

New Resource for Citizenship Teachers

06 Jan 2007

Public Achievement have created a resource for teachers delivering the 'action project' component of the new schools curriculum. The guide helps teachers to work with their students in helping them think through and plan action projects. This resource was created for and funded by the Northern Ireland Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA). The resource should also be useful for youth workers, community workers and others working on citizenship projects with young people. We welcome your feedback on the resource, and PA staff are also available to deliver training and support to teachers and others using this reaource.

Talking Citizenship 2: Walking the Talk

10 Apr 2006

This is a report on the second in the Talking Citizenship series, and this conference looked closely at the issue of 'participation' in work with young people. Dr Ross VeLure Roholt, Public Achievement's Action Research Officer, reports the content of the proceedings and suggests some frameworks for looking at youth participation from the perspectives of both practitioners and young people themselves. This resource will be useful for anyone hoping to do participative work with young people, and also to funders and policy makers who intend to offer more than a tokenistic experience to young people at a very important time in the development of democracy in Northern Ireland. Your feedback on this resource is very much welcomed.

From Spectator to Creator: Shaping Museums from the Outside In

10 Apr 2006

A report on the conference held in Monaghan on 20 and 21 of June 05 to celebrate the work of Public Achievement in and with museums over the preceeding 3 years. The event brought leading local and international practitioners together, and we are delighted that the report was written by Paula Assuncao dos Santos from Brazil. The report also contains a thought provoking essay by Paula. The conference was sponsored by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland under the Peace II programme. The work in museums (coach training) was also supported by CFNI, and the Irish and Northern Irish Departments of Education (young participants) and by the 'Young Roots' scheme of the Heritage Lottery Fund.
